Vamsam - A Review By Sreeni R

Yesterday (14th Aug 2010) was amazing. I met my long time Friend Nishanth after 4 years. He was in the US doing some crazy stuff which themselves can become an interesting screenplay. So after lunch he wanted to go some place. Half of my friends would've guessed this by this time, being me, I naturally suggested we go to a movie. We ended up in Mayajaal. At the ticket counter we noticed that almost all the movies were full and the there were only 3 films left for the 5:30 show. One was "Thillaalangadi", two was "Ananthaputahu veedu" which was quite old and then there was Vamsam.I was thinking logically that Vamsam would be the rite choice as that will lemme write a review for the same which will help me gather a few hits to my website (which otherwise does not attract much crowd :P) So Vamsam it was.

We were waiting outside till the earlier show completed. I always get excited to see people's expression when they come out of the theatre as it speaks volumes about the movie. The show got over and people were rushing out and the look on their face gave me a clear idea about the film. I looked at Nishanth and then at the ticket. It said rs.240. I said Bro, i think we are in deep shit. My friend smiled and gave back a reply. “I think so too”.
We went and sat in our seats and were waiting for the film to start. It did and we were delighted by the initial song sequence and stuff even though it was not unique or original we still liked it. After 10 mins into the film i understood that Pandiraj has taken an approach similar to Inception. First of all he lays the rules, he explains what is “Vamsam”. He explains the diff vamsams in that village, what they do, how they fight, What rules they follow, etc. Then he moves on to establish a conflict between 2 main vamsams which is lead by Hero and the Villain respectively. As usual the film ends victoriously after Hero wins the fight. This is pretty much the story and there was nothing special about it.
After Pasanga, people had a lot of expectations on Pandiraj and I was one among them. Half the way into the film i started worrying about Pandiraj. I started thinking what happened to him and why did he have to do this film. This film had nothing notable, except for a few Comedy Sequences which made this otherwise a very very boring film into a boring film. Especially the mobile phone sequences were very nice and even though it became repetitive after sometime they still provided a bit of comic relief. It was hilarious the way our people climb up the trees every time they get a call as they get the signals only on the tree tops.
Lets analyze this film. This film had good performances from Sunaina and Ganjaa Karuppu and the villain Jayaprakash. Can Arulnidhi Tamilzharasu's immature acting and performance be excused? No would be my call. “Brother i really hope you get it rite next time”. Very few people actually understand good and bad acting. I've always faced opposition when I say that “Dhanush” is a bad actor, just because his bad acting has been always covered up by taut screenplay and other cinematic elements that have been added by his brother and other great directors with whom he has worked with. I can only pity Tamizh for not getting such a brilliant director who could cover him up because he was left alone on canvas without any cover and his lack of skills showed up.
On the whole Vamsam was a very bad experience for me. It had a lot of cliches and there were too many sequences which added no value whatsoever to the film. Most of the people in the audience were dead silent in the first half except for a few sequences for which they laughed and in the second half, the irritation was very well visible. The best dialog from the movie was not from the movie itself but from my friend who called my other friend and told him "Macha, Sreeni screwed up my day. He brought me to Vamsam and think I will not have my Vamsam by the time i come out of the cinema Hall". I think most of the people heard that and I saw a few smiling nods at my friend's reaction.
On the way out of the theatre i remembered the expression from the people's faces whom i saw earlier and it was exactly the same. I asked Nish if i can go and alert others who were waiting for the next show but he said, “Why do u wanna do unnecessary stuff, Yaam petra inbam peruga ivvaiyagam (means, Let everyone enjoy the good that i enjoyed)” We left the theatre and Nish kept on blaming me for taking him to this film, and the worst part is i couldn't defend myself. Watch it if you wanna know see how people in the Village RUN (there is a good 30 mins of running in the film), How people in the village KILL(Minimum of 10 killings), how song sequences can be filmed in the most UNREALISTIC way, and last but not the least if you want a crash course on how to SPOIL your REPUTATION, yeah I'm talking about Pandiraj. Sir i have a lot of respect for you.
