Boss Engira Baskaran - A Reaction By Sreeni R

I've been expecting for its release since i saw its trailer while watching Naan Mahaan Alla. To some extent it keeps up to its promise. Honestly i did not see Siva Manasula Shakthi and so i had no expectations when i entered the hall. It was quite an experience and i did learn a few things as a budding filmmaker.
The film's story is wafer thin and so i'm gonna reveal it because it does not any sense even if i do hold it back.
Boss is a average guy, who is one Naadhaari, Oodhaari fellow (Means a carefree guy with no responsibilities whatsoever, and a lazy bum) whose best friend is Santhanam, a proud owner of a Saloon named “Thala-Thalapathi”. Boss's elder brother is a veterinary doctor and he marries a girl whose sister happens to be Nayanthara with whom our Boss has fallen in love with. Now Boss and Nayan like each other and This brings the film to a state which demands Boss to become more responsible in life so that he can impress his Sister in Law and Nayan's Father.

From here the film takes its course of action which i will not reveal for various reasons.
Lemme first speak of the performances.
Arya has improved a lot, i mean it guys A LOTTTT. I've always considered him to be a very bad actor and i only saw him in the refining stages in “Madarasapattinam”. In Madarasapattinam his acting was till bad. But in “Boss” he's grown, he's learnt to act. He also goes one step further and sarcastically makes fun of his fellow stars too. That was a stunner. But still his acting was below average. Personally i feel he can do a lot better. He's got the looks and if he can somhow acquire his skills, he'll be a deadly combination.
Nayanthara, had nothing to do in this film than, just fallin in love with a stupid guy who has no work and hasn't even comepleted his Degree. One thing is that, i used to like her so so so much :( in the past. In this film she looks old. I've always had this idea of casting her in one of my films if at all i make it to the Big screen very soon but now it looks like stupidity :( So sorry Nayan, something is wrong with you. Now enough of my crying. She seriously had nothing to do in this film.
Now coming to the real star of the film. Santhanam, The Man... The Real Boss of the Film. If at all there is something that made me sit in the theatre and watch this film till the end it is Santhanam's performance in this film. Man he was teriffic. His timing, his dialogue delivery, and surprisingly his acting were all top notch. Its not hard to agree to something which is good when its really good, i would bet that everyone who watches the film will agree that Santhanam is teh real hero of the film. Infact more tahn anybody else it is Santhanam's acting skills that were sharpened and explored to the core.
There are a few sequences where you'll realise that he's an amazing actor. Especially the scenes where They go to a Financier for money and he signs a contract. Next after returning to the Saloon when Arya says “Nee puli vaala pudichita, inimey adha vida mudiyaadhu” sequence. Also the sequences when they bring a new teacher to teach the students and when she gets harrased and ignored by the students. I've just mentioned a few sequences but on the entirity you'll see that he shines with brilliance. I think Rajesh realized the real potential of Santhanam in SMS.
Director Rajesh, He's done a pretty decent job i should say. He's used the rite people in the rite manner and he's done an excellent job in using Santhanam. He has also tried to make his script as much smart as possible by adding a lot of interesting sequences and stuff but for me it lacked finesse. Making a film is nothing less than art, Nobody asked anybody to sacrifice class in the process of making a comedy but for me it looked like this film was built with his confidence on Santhanam rather than on the script. Anyways i think it pays off. Likeability is always a personal opinion and there will be a millions of people who'll find this film to be good.
Now i hate a lot of things about this film. Wafer thin story line, Anyways i don blame it, but i expected a neat screenplay to cover it up but that failed. The last 20 mins gave me a headache, it was so flawed and cliched. I dont know what got into Rajesh's head and i seriously dont understand the kind of tricks that directors play when they refer to their older flicks and stuff like that. I can tell you that there was no need in doin that and it was completely bad. I got very irritated whenever a song sequence came in teh film because it totally slowed down the alrady weak screenplay. Atlast i was praying that the film should get over soon.
Now that i've told you what i think of the film, i do have to tell you that its definitely worth a watch. I'm sure that people who like sugar coated films and those who like Feel good films will love it anyways. Actually this film is a No Brainer so if you are expecting something smart then this film is not for you. Boss Engira Baskaran, should definitely do a decent business and it shoudl definitely bring profits to the oproduction house. More than anuthing else this film should've already brought a lot of acting, dancing and production experience to Arya and a Lot of focus on Santhanam. Downside is that now there are not many actors in teh industry who will want to get dominated by Santhanam and i'm sure that Santhanam is no small fish in a pond, he's a shark in the big blue sea and he will definitely outsmart many of our Kollywood stars when casted along with them.
My Final Words, Go watch Boss Engira Baskaran, if you love FEEL GOOD FILMS, wanna see SANTHANAM at his BEST till date, Arya's improved ACTING and DANCING skills, Nayanthara's FINAL STAGES, CLICHES and LAST 20 MINS of complete CRAP.
