Inception - A Review By Sreeni R

Sometimes people do things because they feel they have to do them. There can be thousands of reasons for them to do that thing, Pressure from Family, Pressure from Society, Pressure from Peers etc, and they don’t mind doing them. They just do it so that they can stay alive, live a dull life, a safe life. Then there are people who belong to a different category. They don’t give a damn what the world thinks about them .They will do what they like and they will achieve what they wanted to achieve, those are the guys who’ve always made revolutions, those care the people who’ve brought upon a great change in this world and they are the people who’ll be remembered forever. Nolan is one such guy. A guy who can transform his dreams into cinema, convert his thoughts into a mellifluous story on Celluloid.

To do this in CINEMA you need extreme talent... When I say talent, it’s not the art of writing or art of selling; it’s something which combines both. Being a master storyteller and maker of a story which sells are completely different things altogether. Christopher Nolan no wonder is the “Wonder boy” of Hollywood and world cinema. He has this knack of making his own mark in everything he does. He has this extremely cunning idea of cutting through your mind and extracting your likes and dislikes. He is an amazing acrobat of the modern filmmaking world, whose balance is puzzlingly solid.

Inception is a Dream... Now that the entire world has seen what he is capable of doing, we can definitively say that he is one of the most respected and the most innovative Thinkers of modern Cinema. I can literally understand how it would've been when he was writing this epic film and I can completely understand what the actors would've undergone while filming and preparing themselves for this film.

Inception is a Dream... Yeah and I stand by it, because I’m still unable to believe that Chris Nolan actually pulled it off. While half the world was wondering what was in the story, I was more interested in knowing how in this world was he able to do this? How did he pull it off without a scratch? How could he just do something like this? Tease the audience, irritate them at places, make them think like they were supposed to solve some Math problem which they didn’t know and still make them love the movie? He definitely loves his audience and he has a lot of respect for them, which is very evident from his film. He does not consider his audience to be dumb, which most of the other directors do. He enjoys giving them challenges and enjoys more when they rejoice. I just love this attitude of his. He couldn’t have made his fans happier and he couldn’t have made the day better than this for Cinema.

He has laid a platform so strong that the future can build on top of it. He has defied the laws of Box Office and still has managed to fill it. I wouldn’t say that he is greater than some other director, but I can easily say that he has delivered hope for change while others haven't in the recent times.

I'm myself so obsessed with the Dream ideas. My friends know that most of my stories always involve dreams and consequences. Also my first screenplay was completely based on dreams. For me, The Movie was more like a Subject Matter close to heart. I once wrote a short story which was loosely based on the concept of recurring dreams, But Nolan goes one step (I’m not sure maybe 4 steps above ) above, and he tears down the logical scape to create his own Dreamscape which is full of logic. Nowhere in the movie did I ever feel that there was a plot hole, except for a few things which my mind is yet to understand completely but that’s fine, i think a second viewing will simply solve the problem. Now sitting there in the hall I was just thinking, "Why the hell did I not think of something like this?" I was so close to this but then I never attempted something like this. I'm an emotional person, therefore the challenges I face when I write a screenplay are different. Definitely Nolan has his own methods of writing a film which will have its own complicated problems which I don even want to think of.
When I came back home I was purely thinking of Nolan and I knew for sure that my Ego was hurt, badly...

Talking about the performances, I would say it was picture perfect. Name any actor from the film and you'll see that they delivered their best. Everyone was up to their job. I've found some exceptional talent in Joseph Gordon-Levitt (JGL) especially. The way he maintained his cool all through the film was terrific. I was totally blown away by the confidence that was shown by the actors which could've only come due to their trust on their captain.

Technical Stuff, Rite... Me writing a review definitely has to touch the technical aspects.
Cinematography and editing were like top notch.
Wally Pfister is the guy who usually handles cinematography for Nolan and he has never failed Nolan. His strokes are very unique. You can easily know from a few initial scenes that it’s the same guy who photographed Nolan's other films. I would say he should get more credit than he is actually getting for his work. Most of the time, his name is being overshadowed by Nolan but that’s pretty understandable. Guys who've seen the film should understand that the Cafe Blast scene was mostly captured real time. The specks that flew over Di Caprio and Ellen Page were the scenes where spl-efx was applied. So Nolan says that he likes to do most of the stuff in camera and this is what I call is true cinema.

Editing was awesomely done. In the later half of the movie, Nolan introduces like 4 layers of suspended dreams floating somewhere in the imaginary space and Lee Smith did an amazing job in getting the job done by mixing all these layers the way they have to be.

Music was by Hans Zimmer. This time around, it is not that classically sounding music from him which he did for the Dark Knight (TDK). The music for this film is adequate and it supports the film in its own ways. While in TDK it was like awesome, where you see the music changing the mood of a scene, here it supplements a scene. Kudos... Btw, this is something like ARR's score mostly jungle + techno + electronic + raw + progressive etc etc etc...

Technically the movie just supported the vision of its maker; unlike other movies which bank on them here it was only a vehicle. This is something every budding filmmaker should learn.

The film itself is so immune to spoilers. How much ever you discuss this with someone, you’ll still want to watch it, I cant remember the last film which would’ve had the same properties, but thinking hard I only remember Matrix Series and Memento. The story simply starts with Di Caprio explaining this hi-fi concept of a dream within a dream and how it could be used as a tool of deception to fool the Target. This is pretty essential as the audience will get to know the world they are in rite now and then Nolan starts getting into his groove of making things impossible, possible and taking you through his jungle of complexities. I would say, you’ll enjoy this ride because you can 100% trust the driver. He is Just at his top form. In an interview he says that this was the film he wanted to make after memento and he’s been writing and rewriting the spec for almost 10 years. So we can know the kind of hard work which has been put in to make this classic.

I think most of you already know the Story line. Cobb is given a job which will take him back to his own country which he is unable to enter as of now as people think he killed his wife. Saito wants Cobb to perform INCEPTION on Fisher.Jr so that he can dissolve his company which is like the single biggest energy company. If Fisher dissolves the company then it might provide Saito the much needed space to compete in that area. Therefore to do this pretty difficult job Cobb recruits a team which is very skeptical about this very idea of Inception. But then after they get into the game they get into lots of trouble, twists and turns, hassles and agonies which also can be felt by the viewer and at last perform the much needed Inception, which seriously we enjoy too. But then at the end Nolan gives a twist which only makes you wonder whether what happened really happened in a dream of reality. That’s the beauty of this screenplay. You are your own guru. You can accept things as it is or ponder a little more and find out that this movie can be interpreted a 1000 ways. But in no way does Nolan lets down the viewers. The sci-fi scenes in this movie is like one of the best sequences you’ll find in the last decade or so, not that they have cool graphics n stuff, but because they provided so much meaning and depth to the entire story line.

My Take:
As I told you I’m a big fan of Nolan and I’ve seen all his movies and I don think he has ever done a mistake in his trade. His strength lies in his paper and pen. He introduces rite things at the rite time. For me one of the biggest problems with his films has been emotional touch. Not that it bothers me, but for me personally I love movies with emotional content and I really get moved when it makes an impact. In most of Nolan’s films I don get that. It could be a problem with me but I’m just telling you. The same happens in Inception too. There are a few things which could’ve been explained better, which I think Nolan would’ve thought about but I think he skipped them considering the length of the film.
I think I will get the emotional content when I view it the second time which I’m gonna do this coming weekend, because my mind was definitely working all the time getting the plot and getting awestruck by the action sequences.
For me the ending was a bit hollywoodish, (I was praying that such a ending shouldn’t come, and I guessed that he would end the film in this fashion almost when I was half the way) but thinking of it, I thought it also adds a lot of meaning to the story therefore nothing to complain there as well. He could’ve given a bit more solidity to the ending rather than a speculating one.
I’m going to rate this film as 11/10 and 6/5. This is one of the bestest films I’ve ever seen and I’ll remember this film forever because it hurt my ego. Not to mention Nolan, has opened new avenues for the future filmmakers and I think it’s high time we all exploit that.

Inception, is kind of a film which is rare and made with true passion and dedication. It’s like these skillful paintings done by artists. Screw just a simple curve it screws up the entire ART. The trick lies in applying the rite technique to the rite idea to the rite people. That when your work clicks and people accept what you’ve done as a classic. Now the whole world is applauding and praising Nolan for his ultimate work till date. Hope he continues doing so and I really pray to God to provide him Good strength and Keep him safe from all Harm (Cliches, Political and Money Pressures).

God bless!!!
